Imagine if you a will, you are at sea. While you are on your boat you hear a rumble. This rumble is followed by a bubbling of the water and the desperate look of horror on the other passengers faces. Then a giant head of a serpent appears, followed by another. It finally ends with more heads then you could count, and the destruction of your boat and you. In modern days this would be laughed off if someone told you. However, if you were to tell this tale long ago, many people would believe you and some would even try to help. That is, because this was a very common story, and it was all blamed on one thing. The demon of the deep. In the time before time existed there was myth, and in Greece myth was king. From atlas to Hercules, through the pages of Zeus, there were battles and struggles, each with different creatures. No creature from the sea was as feared as the giant multi headed monster known as .. Hydra. Where did this story start though? What would make someone think of this beast, and why would they choose for it to look like that? First lets start with how it looks according to legend. The hydra in pictures seems to be between anywhere from 10 feet to multiple stories tall. It seems to have the skin of a lizard making it reptilian in nature. The hydra has been known to have between 20 and 50 heads. Everytime you chop off one of the heads two heads grow in its place. Knowing that leads many to believe that it can have an infinite number of heads. It has four legs, two long legs in the front and two shorter in the back. The hydra also has a long tail as well. Second, Where did the story start? The story of the hydra or the Lernean Hydra was start by the Greeks. The story of the hydra first appears in something called Hesiod’s Theogony. Which is a poem. The oldest images of the hydra are on a pair of fibulae dating back to 700 BCE., which are like modern day broche or fastener for garments. The fibulae show a six headed monster, but Alcaeus in 600 BCE added additional heads to the myth of the monster. With vast amounts of stories each story added my heads. The total eventually became 50, and in some counts may be even more. So what was the story about? The story of Lernaean Hydra is about Hercules. Hydra was the offspring of Typhon a large serpentine giant and Echidna was a half woman half snake monster. Hydra was raised by Hera, who specifically raised the creature to kill Hercules. The hydra lived in Lake Lerna. So if you ever want to try to see it, I would suggest going to visit. Carefully. During Hercules trials, he was expected to fight the hydra. After a long battle the only immortal had that the beast had was cut off by a golden sword given to Hercules by Athena. Other variations of the story tell of Hercules using the beast own venom to cut the rest of the heads off. I think this is a great legend. If you have anything you want add leave a comment below.

Is There A Real Life Loch Ness Monster? In Scotland in the Scottish Highlands there is a monster, one that lives in the depths of Loch Ness. The lochs have been a controversial place due to many mysteries that surround it. None of them greater than a creature of myth and lore discovered in the early 1930’s. Many people from the area have claimed to see powerful waves coming off the tops of two enormous humps in the water, with sightings of a large animal silhouette in the depths. The legend of a creature that rules the loch may have been around even earlier as some predict, leading people to not know how old the creature is. Even if more than one exists is still a mystery. How can a creature so big elude us? With our vast technological equipment, we should be able to pinpoint anything down to a foot in length, or more. Yet, we can not seem to locate this animal, and maybe that is because of where it lives. The loch itself covers 22 sq miles, with the lowest point being 230 meters. There is plenty of room for a giant to hide. Underneath the surface everything looks calm, till a head and long neck emerge from the water. You know what that sounds like, a dinosaur. From what we can tell from the description of Nessie, aka the Loch Ness Monster, it is a reptilian creature. From one description by George Spicer and his wife, a creature having a long body about 4 feet high and 25 feet long, with a wavy, narrow neck, slightly thicker than the trunk of an elephant, 10-12 foot wide. The strange thing is that they saw no limbs. According to some accounts Nessie has flippers, if the creature was standing on the road then they may have been slightly hidden to the Spicers. The most famous photo showed Nessie with one hump, long neck and head out of the water. One trademark feature about the Loch Ness Monster is the shape of its head, which is shaped like a horse's head. So where would a monster like this come from. Loch Ness is a large body of water, but where did Nessie come from. One of the most realistic ideas is that Nessie is a dinosaur, more specifically Plesiosaur. The Plesiosaur lived millions of years ago along with the dinosaurs. The origins of Nessie could be as simple as that dinosaur finding a way to survive through the centuries whether it is in the depths of the water, or in an underground cave, where they can be left alone outside the reach of humans. To me this is the most likely scenario if Nessie is real. What are the chances that this is mistaken identity though? Through the years there have been thoughts that the Loch Ness Monster is nothing but bad vision. Some people explain that they thought they saw something and it winds up being a piece of driftwood.
Even some types of snakes are rather large. If you have ever seen photos of anacondas swimming through the amazon river, you will know exactly what I mean. Many people see things that they want to see, whether it's because they are daydreaming, and their minds want to really see something so it makes it up. The fact is that so many people have seen things in the Loch that it's hard to dismiss the stories. So where was the first sighting of this magnificent monster, researchers say it is as early as the sixth century AD, by the creator of “The life of St. Columba” Adomnan. Saint Columba was burying a man by the River Ness. The was attacked by a large creature from the water. He called it a “water beast”. They tried rescuing the man but he died. Columba sent a follower to find the beast. When the beast tried to attack, Columba made the sign of the cross and the beast as if pulled with ropes, was pulled back and away from the followers. Many people don’t believe this story, believe instead that this story is a retelling of stories from long before that in medieval times. If you have any more you want me to find out about this beast or any thing you can think of you want to say, leave a comment below. First off, I am a huge, huge fan of dragons. In fact, most people I know are. They are bohemeths of the world, with wings that can block out the sun. Crumbling towers and burning down farms isn’t some massive goal, it is just a Tuesday. That’s it. Dragons have been in myth and legend since the beginning of man, but the furthest evidence recorder comes from the 4th century. It was around that time in history that people found the bones of a giant creature. This was the start of archeology as we know it. Where do these stories come from? Stories of vikings, even some modern sightings of giant winged beasts in the sky. So What are dragons? Although most people alive or who have ever lived have not come close to a dragon, we have reason to believe that they may still be alive. Through sightings, and the discovery of new species every day, the chances that we have found every animal are very small. Where would they hide? I have no idea. The origins of the dragon supposedly come from the first discovery of dinosaur bones. Construction workers in China discovered a long necked dinosaur fossil. The fossil belonged to Qijianglong, a dinosaur that roamed the world 160 million years ago. As the rumors of this terrifying beast got out, word started to spread. So what do dragons look like? According to most people they are very long reptilian creatures. Some kinds of dragons have wings and others do not. The head is long and thin. If the dragon has arms they usually have very large sharp talons. If they have arms they are usually short. So, if I had to guess I would say the dragon looks like an anorexic t-rex with wings...basically. However, many cultures have many different varieties of dragons, including ones that breathe fire. For instance, the chinese dragon is bigger and has no wings. A lot like falcor from the never ending story. The varieties vary in size from dinosaur proportions to as small as a chicken. Basically there are many stories and all seem to be different. It is believed that some of these dragons are actually dinosaurs. Dinosaurs that have somehow survived through the millennia. Presumably through stories and ancient scrolls and drawings. However, there is another creature who bears a passing resemblance to the fabled creature… As the world started to expand, sailors started to gather the courage to explore exotic new lands. Those new lands included Indonesia. In Indonesia, there are many fascinating and amazing things including, the komodo dragon. The komodo dragon is a huge reptile. They are aggressive and can reach up to 10 feet in length. Many stories from sailors tell about these great dragons and bring them home where the stories spread. Evidence of these stories can be found in nordic legend, as well as greek legend. The word dragon comes from the greek word drakon meaning serpent or seafish. Stories of these creatures have been around for ages, and we are no closer to finding the answer then we were before. So if you have anything add be sure to leave a comment below. The abominable snowman, or yeti, is a legendary beast from around the Himalayas. A monster of mythic proportions and stature, measuring up to 8 ft tall. The casting of footprints that have been found tell of a giant, a beast that hunts in the snow and powers through arctic winds to assault his victims. But, what else is there. To find the answers to that and many other questions, we can look towards movies. Movies like Monsters Inc have glorified this beast for the amusement of children and grownups alike. Dealing with things the way that Hollywood does, makes for a very interesting take on a rather disturbing creature. While other movies like "The Abominable Snowman (1957) tells us of a much different version of the beast. The aggressive and savage animal known to most of us, or anyone who has had the misfortune of coming across him or signs of him. While most of us go on with our lives, this creature has ripped through the Himalayas on a dark and destructive path. While movies and stories have painted out this creature's life in a variety of ways, we may need to dive deeper to see what this beast is truly made of. So what does this creature look like? When some people think of the abominable snowman they think of a large bipedal ape like creature, between 6 to 8ft tall. This is the basic look, but there is a problem. So far, no one has seen the abominable snowman. There have been stories and grainy pictures but so far no real proof. There is a small group of people that know about this entity. That group is the Sherpas of the Himalayas, and they have known about him for a long time. Sharing their own stories shows us just who close to danger they really are. From close encounters, to really close encounters such as seeing them from a distance and hearing something sneak up behind them and smell their hair. While all these are word of mouth, they are deeply ingrained in the culture. The origins of the abominable snowman are not known, some people believe that their origins are extraterrestrial. The stories of the himalayan yeti range from an outcast wildman, to the missing link, but one thing is for sure, it is all over the history of the region. The elders of the groups recalled terrifying stories that have been handed down through the generations of brutal attacks on anyone that came close to the beast. The stories predate buddahist religious beliefs of this creature. The creature has been linked to bigfoot and the skunk ape. Many of these hairy bipedal creatures are looked at as the same thing, because they are very similar to each other. It was once stated that they may be part of a parallel dimension that found a portal here, and may have gotten stuck. The first sightings can be recalled by elders but for us the first details of a Himalayan creature came from expeditions to Nepal and Mount Everest itself. According to H. Siiger the yeti was part of pre-buddahist beliefs. According to him the Lepacha people called it a “Glacier Being.” The first recorded incident in the 19th century was by B. H. Hodgens, whose tale was recounted in a famous journal, about his trip to Nepal. As the story grew the legend quickly did too. Hodgens stated that he saw a giant bipedal creature completely covered in hair. In 1899, another story came out about an explorer in the tibetan region that found footprints of enormous size that he thought may have been by a very large bear. There have been many stories since then that have circulated telling of large footprints found around Mt. Everest. Though physical proof is hardly evident. With the turn of the centuries cameras have become an everyday part of life, that is where we have got a ton of photographic evidence, and it's on the rise. So if you ever decide that you want to come face to face with one of these giants, then it's time to plan a trip. While most of these places are cold and foriegn they are your most likely chances to find him.
First, Nepal. There have been many reports of seeing the yeti here. If you are up for scouting and significant amounts of searching then this is your destination. Second, Mt. Everest. While most people dread hiking even a little bit, this is the mother of all hikes. However, if you want to get up close and personal with the beast, then this is your best option.
